Dear NYC SPUG Member, May 2009
JUNE MEETING - Wednesday, June 3rd, 5:30 PM

SUBJECT
The Challenges and SharePoint Enterprise Deployments (and a Few Solutions)

SPEAKER
Jim Kane, Principal Consultant at Paragon Computer Professionals

This presentation will focus on the many and varied challenges of implementing SharePoint on an enterprise level, whether for a small company or for a large company. Enterprise deployments present unique issues; from expectations through politics, from infrastructure decisions through going out of box or customizing - once more than a few people are involved in decision making deploying SharePoint across an enterprise can get messy quickly. We'll look at some real-life examples of challenges, and some ways to meet those challenges.

Jim has been working in the portal and knowledge management arena for nearly 10 years, and with SharePoint since 2003. He has been and is currently deeply involved in large enterprise deployments. Jim has helped over a dozen companies maximize their use of SharePoint. Jim's focus is typically on the functional side of SharePoint, and how to speed adoption of SharePoint to improve knowledge sharing and collaboration. Jim is co-author of a patented process for community enablement, and has seen much of the good and bad of SharePoint deployments as well as other portals (Oracle and DataChannel) and related technologies. Jim actually had a title once of "Manager of Knowledge Management" which his wife found far too funny. Jim has a master’s degree in Communication from the University of Pittsburgh, where he was also an adjunct instructor for 15 years.

SHAREPOINT UTILITIES: DISCOVERING GUIDS
by Kathryn Birstein

To reference alsmost anything in SharePoint you need to know its GUID and discovering these GUIDs can be a pain. Most people just grab them from SharePoint URLs where they are often appended as a parameter, for example, as part of the Audience Targeting settings link:

(website)/_layouts/ListEnableTargeting.aspx?List={394974b9-30c8-401b-bb9e-36a61acc242c}

However, there is an easier way! You can use Ontolica's SharePoint Explorer, a handy tool which will give you a wealth of information besides GUIDS about your Virtual Servers, Site Collections, Sites, Lists and Files. But SharePoint Explorer needs to be run on a farm server. A more quick and dirty solution is the Little GUID Picker which can be found on the MSDN blog (it is attached at the bottom of the article as "lists.zip"). The big advantage of the GUID Picker, besides its simplicity, is that it utilizes web services, so it can run remotely on your desktop machine (yeah!). You can see screenshots and an explanation of how to use the tool on Serge van den Oever's blog. Just remember that the GUID Picker will security trim so if you don't have rights to a particular list with the ID you're logged on to your desktop with, you won't see the list in GUID Picker. This has tripped me up on more than one occasion!
