Critical Path TrainingDeep dive into SharePoint 2010 and Claims-based Security
SharePoint 2010 introduces a new claims-based security model that will impact the way the companies design, implement and enforce security with their SharePoint sites. This session explains the fundamentals concepts of a claims-based model and shows how the new claim-based model makes it possible to use new types of security principals such as Active Directory distribution lists and MOSS Audiences as first class security objects which can be used to securely configure access to securable objects such as sites, lists, items and documents. The session will walk through developing a custom claims-provider with Visual Studio 2010 which will effectively demonstrates the flexibility of how we define the people and groups from whom you need to configure access.

AvePointBest Practices for Content Lifecycle Management with Microsoft SharePoint
Microsoft SharePoint is the industry’s most versatile and powerful enterprise-class collaboration system. But in order to leverage SharePoint as a true enterprise content management platform, an intelligent, well governed content lifecycle strategy is required. Such a strategy must define the platform’s information and systems architecture, and diligently govern the process of content authorship, storage, delivery, auditing, and dispensation, without overburdening system or staff resources. During this session, we will discuss best practices for designing a well governed and scalable content lifecycle strategy that ensures diligent content management, efficiently integrates legacy content and storage systems, and delivers both the transparency and accountability required of an enterprise-class content management system.

NeudesicInformation Architecture Essentials
Proper analyzing and designing of your Information Architecture can be a critical early step in your SharePoint Deployment Planning process, which can make or break the success of your implementation. For starters, it provides the basis for; how the sites will be structured and divided into a set of sub sites, how data will be surfaced and presented to the users, how information will be targeted to specific audiences, and discoverability of content through search. But it will also have a very direct impact on the administrative overhead, and scalability of your SharePoint environment. During this presentation Rafael Perez will discuss the "how" and "why's" of the critical steps, and share successful simplified approach to completing the process.

SogetiRendering Templates: How to use them for Custom List Form development
A Rendering Template is an ASP.NET user control that renders what’s inside its tags.  SharePoint controls including web parts use Rendering Templates.  The out of the box List Form web parts (DispForm.aspx, EditForm.aspx, NewForm.aspx) use Rendering Templates.  In this session, I will show you what Rendering Templates are and how you can use them.  I will give a couple of demos showing how easy they are to use for branding and dive a little deeper to take on more interesting use cases like Field level security.  I will compare/contrast this approach and “other” practices of customizing list forms.

LogicaManual Adoption and Migration Made Easy
Based on a project for a large energy client and many years of working with SharePoint, project team created tools and methodology for successfully completing and saving time for future similar projects.

Project scope was to create a new SharePoint site and  analyze hundreds of documents from over 25 different sites and 4 different platforms and migrate the core documents to the new site.  Client’s current SharePoint experts were not able to provide any tools, templates or methodology for this type of project.

We completed project successfully and created tools and documentation for other similar projects to use.  Site design was very clear and easy for user to understand and navigate.  Documents were not stored in folders, but used custom meta data to provide clear and consistent organization.

BlueThread TechnologiesHow to dramatically increase SharePoint Scalability, Performance and Manageability with little effort
Storing SharePoint content (BLOBs) in the SQL database poses many issues:

•       Improper use of SQL to store unstructured content
•       Overuse of Tier 1 storage
•       DR, Indexing, and Maintenance tasks fall outside of operational windows
•       Planning, rollout, and on-going maintenance complexity as a resulting from Microsoft guidelines
•       Inability to meet regulatory compliance requirements

All of these factors increase risk and cost to your SharePoint environment and projects.  We’ll discuss various approaches to moving Content (BLOBs) out of SQL while increasing SharePoint  performance and backup timeframes. Business benefits, cost savings, and ROI will be discussed as well as a live‐demonstration of relocating SharePoint content to Cloud platforms.

AvePointWinning Strategies for Successful SharePoint Backup and Recovery
When deploying SharePoint as a business-critical collaboration platform and digital-asset repository, implementing a comprehensive backup and recovery strategy is absolutely essential. Though SharePoint and SQL Server natively provide some data protection capabilities, these prove inadequate for most competitive organizations. In this session we will discuss the key components of any successful SharePoint backup and recovery plan. After analyzing SharePoint's native data and platform protection capabilities, we will identify best practices, available free tools, and other best-of-breed solutions for ensuring a fully protected SharePoint platform.  Finally, we will discuss SharePoint archiving, and review how intelligent archiving procedures, when coupled with a successful data protection plan, can improve platform performance and reliability, and lower storage and management costs.

Moss Delight ServicesOvercoming the obstacles of branding a portal
Most users are turned off by the out-of-the-box look and feel of a SharePoint portal, while IT may believe branding to be too daunting of a task to undertake. There is a common misconception that, while it’s possible for a website to look stunning, a SharePoint site has to be rigid and bland. The users are frequently left with a less than appealing portal and thus a less than ideal central place for them to work. To the user, SharePoint is a great collaboration tool, search tool, content management system, et cetera, but it feels so blah. Using the skill sets common to developers, we can create an appealing portal that drives traffic, delivers information to the users, and establishes a central workplace.

Swift EnergyGeneral Presentation - Lessons learned at Swift

Lessons learned while deploying SharePoint at Swift Energy

  • SharePoint will grow quickly in spite of your best efforts.  Think big and then double that size.
  • Roll out SharePoint in stages throughout your company even if it is small
    • This will help you throughout the life of SharePoint.
    • You will have a number of different design phases even before the site goes live.
    • Once the users understand the various functions of SharePoint, you will have even more redesigns or new site requests.
    • Train your content administrators or Power Users while you are developing their site
It will help them to take ownership of the site from the beginning
  • Train that site’s end user group immediately upon taking their site live
    • This will help them to understand the benefits of SharePoint and allow them to use it with confidence.

Technical Presentation:
Catapult - "Editor Parts - Extending the Web Part Editor Tool Pane"
Have you ever needed to capture properties for custom Web Parts, and realized that the standard textboxes and drop-down lists in the Web Part Editor Tool Pane weren’t sufficient? Perhaps you’ve wanted to show a list of sub-sites or libraries to choose from, maybe a list of options coming from a separate system. SharePoint allows us to do just that with Editor Parts, a standard ASP.NET class that allows a user to edit an associated Web Part control by modifying its layout, appearance, properties, behavior, or other characteristics. During this presentation Catapult Systems will demonstrate how to use Editor Parts to extend the standard capabilities of the standard Web Part Editor Tool Pane.

Catapult SystemsGeneral - "Soup to Nuts: Project Planning for SharePoint Implementations"
General Presentation
Project Planning for SharePoint Implementations
Whether you are implementing SharePoint for the first time or for the hundredth time, very few things are going to be as important as a solid road plan. There are an infinite number ways to get between point A and point B, but what may appear to be shortest path may not be the best or quickest way to get there. To make matters worse SharePoint provides a large range of services; what works for one type of SharePoint implementation may not work for another. During this session, Catapult will  cover the many aspects of putting together a proper project plan and schedule for SharePoint. We will share lessons learned, approaches, key milestones, and tasks that should be part of almost every SharePoint related project plan; and provide a detailed overview of a real world project schedule for a successful SharePoint implementation.

AvanadeImplementing Business Logic from Excel Services in SharePoint 2007
Excel is the most widely used tool for performing data analysis and reporting. It is also considered a powerful database in most organizations both big and small. So making use of this valuable legacy information stored in Excel is critical for most organizations. Excel Services is a new server technology that is included in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 but dare to say that it is one of the most underutilized techniques. The goal of this presentation is to provide a technical overview of Excel Services with demos and dive into implementing Business Logic from Excel in SharePoint 2007 applications. This talk is primarily targeted towards developers and also business analysts to a certain extent.
Agenda:
        Overview of Excel Services
        Key benefits in SharePoint applications
        Real World Business Cases
        Demos
Pros and Cons of in SharePoint applications
Proposed Demos:
1.) Create a Simple WebPart using Business Logic from Excel 2007 Worksheet
2.) (Time Permitting) Create a simple dashboard in Excel 2007 from SSAS 2008 and publish in SharePoint 2007
Audience Takeaways:
1.) Thought-provoking use cases on how they can use Excel Services immediately in their organizations
2.) How to reduce costs because business analysts and information workers can make changes to the calculation model without requiring developers to recode a solution

Hitachi ConsultingGovernance, Risk, and Compliance Automation: Managing Legal Risk and E-Discovery compliance using MOSS 2007
Daniel V. Adam - Director - Microsoft Strategic Services - Hitachi Consulting
Recent high-profile lawsuits demonstrate that enterprises are better protected if they keep complete automated archives for electronic records including email. These days an enterprise that prematurely destroy records or most cannot account for electronic records stand to lose a lot more in court then they would have prior to Dec. 2006.  This session will identify how to use Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007 to address electronic record management as it applies to the E-Discovery process  in ways an organization can mitigate the costs of E-Discovery.

E-Discovery requires an organization to respond in a short window of time,  the process from start to finish will cover:
    * Broad search and identification of records that may be impacted by the Litagtion
    * Gathering the data (records)
    * Detailed analysis and processing of these recoreds (can be very iterative)
    * Taking the final 'filtered' set of records and putting them on hold
    * Delivery of these records to the requesting party
Want to know how organizations are dealing with E-Discovery as well as what some of the best practices are in using MOSS to manage records that include email to insure the process of responding to litigation can be exponentially reduced? This is one HSPUG event not to be missed.

KnowledgeLakeScaling SharePoint 2007 - Storage Architect
Most experienced client server developers know that poor database architecture can absolutely wreck the performance of an application. A poor relational design, inefficient stored procedures, or even improperly indexed tables can have a dramatically negative effect on how SQL Server is able to serve data to your application. The same is true not only of logical design but also of physical storage implementation, particularly when large databases are present. Even with a properly architected database, the sheer storage requirements of large database data files cause SQL Server to spend significant additional time to seek the requested data.

On May 21st, Russ Houberg from KnowledgeLake will share with HSPUG his prescriptive guidance, as well as strive to explain a little bit of the “how and why” that back up the recommendations. As his recommendations are focused on implementing SQL Server 2005, it is also applicable to SQL Server 2008. The primary goal is to provide specific SharePoint storage architecture guidance, discuss the reasons behind the recommended limits for SharePoint databases, and discuss how we might extend those limits by implementing SharePoint databases in SQL Server in a more granular way.

US Marine CorpsVirtural Work Environment - Beyond Brick-and-Mortar
Work environments housed in brick-and-mortar structures — with employees working on computers, file cabinets holding every document produced and hard drives storing data — are simply outdated. This work environment has not radically changed for more than 20 years, with the exception of the addition of e-mail.

This portrayal of the current work environment should be viewed as fragile and susceptible to contributing to inefficiencies. But it also points up workers’ reliance on the e-mail for a major part of their knowledge management, albeit in a method that does not make this knowledge easy to search, retrieve, share or archive.

Enter a new concept called Virtual Work Environment (VWE). Not only does this environment revolutionize how organizations can think about work processes, but it extends business efficiencies beyond the traditional brick-and-mortar limitations of a corporation. If done correctly, this new approach promises to improve business processes, create better collaborative environments, and, enhance corporate knowledge management – all of which provides a real ROI (Return on Investment).

This presentation will outline the concepts of VWE to include the technology foundations; provide the logical steps to integrate these concepts within one’s organization; and, provide some very compelling lessons-learned from the Federal Aviation Administration, US Marine Corps, and the State of Virginia. All of these organizations have to some degree embraced VWE. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was VWE 1.0 and has grown to over 30,000 participants. The US Marine Corps can be considered VWE 2.0. While it has been in operations much shorter than the FAA, the refined implementation processes have accelerate the adoption of this new approach much faster than was realized within the FAA. This presentation will also discuss these implementation methods.

UnisysUnisys' Knowledge Management SharePoint Strategy
The general public may know Unisys as a company to provide Enterprise Content Management and collaboration solution. The latter includes system integration services with solutions from Microsoft as welll as other industry ECM solutions.

What the public may not know is that, besides Microsoft, Unisys has the second largest SharePoint installation around the world. Like many industry peers, getting there was not a walk in the park. With thousands of users and groups of business units, the application of SharePoint was just as critical as the implementation.

On January 16th, Unisys will share with us their SharePoint application in the context of Knowledge Management. Members of HSPUG will get to see the inner workings of Unisys SharePoint application from an internal point of view.

MicrosoftSolutions and Features
So you've got your new capabilities built. User experience is there, code is debugged and optimized. Now, how do you get the darn project up on the server in a controlled and maintainable manner? More to the point, how do you support and upgrade it later on after you've gotten it there? This is not a process designed by the pit crew from a NASCAR race. There are parts in your SharePoint that with the right nuts and bolts fastened, will increase its performance significantly. Want to know what these are? Come to the meeting and we'll talk more about it. Also, we'll also share with the members how the new Solution and Feature framework in WSS v3 helped Microsoft product group create MOSS.

Sogeti - USAPortals 2.0 – Making your portal THE business critical application
For many of us, SharePoint 2003 taught us the joys of document libraries, surveys, and discussion groups. Many portals set up around consuming these components failed, however, because no one really cared enough about document collaboration to actually use the sites consistently. With the release of MOSS 2007, many companies are getting a second (or first!) chance to re-design their portals to become a much stronger force in their organization. This presentation will provide a high-level business discussion about the critical areas you need to address to turn your portal site from just “one more tool” to a business critical application that introduces efficiencies and clarity into the daily lives of you and your fellow employees. Far from answering all of your questions, this session will give you enough knowledge to challenge Business and IT with the hard questions that can help drive some organizations out of the traditional portal thought processes in which they have been entrenched for years.

Catapult SystemsGovernance and SharePoint 2007
When companies make the move to rollout a tool as robust and full-featured as SharePoint 2007, simply installing the product, handing over a URL, and saying "okay, go play with it" is rarely enough.  The goal of every business that implements SharePoint is to utilize the immense amount of power that it can bring to bear in the organization.  Without proper governance, SharePoint features and technologies can get out of control.  A balance must be struck between no governance - large-scale adoption with no ability to manage it, and heavy governance - low-to-no adoption with complete control.

On June 20th, guest speaker Jim O'Brien from Catapult Systems will discuss governance as it applies to SharePoint 2007 implementations.
